Description:
Aprepitant (Emend®) is an antiemetic drug that belongs to a class of drugs called Substance Pantagonists (SPA). It mediates its effect by blocking the Neurokinin 1 (NK1) receptor.

Indications:
1. Prevention of Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting.
2. Prevention of Chemotherapy Induced Nausea and Vomiting.
3. Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome.

Mode of Action:
Substance P/NK, receptor appears the final common pathway to regulate vomiting in medulla (the vomiting center in the brain). Aprepitant crosses the blood brain barrier and occupies brain NK; receptors. Aprepitant augments the antiemetic activity of the 5-HTs-receptor antagonist Ondansetron and Corticosteroid; inhibits both the acute and delayed phases of Chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting and Post-operative nausea and vomiting.
