Description:
Povin^® contains Povidone-Iodine that is a stable chemical complex of polyvinyl-pyrolidone (PVP) and elemental iodine.

Indications:
Povin^® Ointment: It is used in pre-operative and post-operative skin infections, primary or secondary topical infections, infected surgical incisions, infected decubitus or stasis ulcers, pyodermas, secondarily infected dermatoses and infected traumatic lesions. It can be used in aiding the healing of ulcers, burns, incisions, minor injuries and other topical lesions. It can also be used for acne vulgaris and vaginal infection. Povin® 10% Antiseptic Solution: For use as an antiseptic skin cleanser for major and minor surgical procedures where a quick drying effect is desired. It is also used in treating primary or secondary topical infections, infected surgical incisions, infected decubitus or stasis ulcers, pyodermas, secondarily infected dermatoses, and infected traumatic lesions. Prophylactically it is used to prevent microbial contamination in burns, incisions and other topical lesions ; for degerming skin in hyperalimentation and catheter care. The use of Povin 10% Antiseptic Solution for abrasions, minor cuts and wounds, may prevent the development of infections and permit wound healing. Povin® 1% Gargle & Mouth-wash: It is used for the treatment and prevention of inflammatory conditions of the mouth and throat infections. It is also used for the oral hygiene prior to during and after dental and oral surgery.

Mode of Action:
The antimicrobial effects of Povidone-Iodine relate to the presence of diatomic elemental form of iodine rather than hypophalous acid. Activity is thus significantly affected by pH and is greater under acidic condition. Action relates to an oxidative interaction with sulfhydril group of biological macromolecules such as proteins and amino acids and also directly through iodination of amino acids in proteins.
